Essentially, terpenes are organic aromatic compounds found throughout wild plants that are all around us. They are ultimately responsible for the flavour profile that we enjoy when eating our favourite fruits or for the delightful smell in the air when walking through a field of lavender or pine trees.
Terpenes are not directly involved in the growth, development or reproduction of the plant. Instead, they are produced to attract certain insects and animals for pollination purposes or defend against consumption by certain pests and herbivores that may try and consume the plant.

Remarkably, there are more than 50,000 unique terpenes that have been identified to date, many of which we experience on a daily basis. From the vibrant citrus burst of an orange to the floral overload of lavender, terpenes are responsible.
